The NFL Has Gone Mad

The Cowboys Can't Even Lose Right

Hello Beautiful People,

The NFL might actually be crazier than college football, which I didn't think was possible after what we witnessed on Saturday. The Cowboys won a game, while the Colts are struggling and the Texans are faltering. So, let’s dive in.

4-7 Dallas Cowboys 34, 7-5 Washington Commanders 26
For some reason, the Dallas Cowboys seem to be playing well and winning games despite having a season that is already over. This could end up costing them a top-five draft pick in what looks to be one of the best drafts we’ve seen in a long time. Interestingly, they are not completely out of the playoff hunt, which is quite surprising. They are three games back but have the easiest schedule in the league for the remainder of the season. As for the game itself, it started off slowly, but things really picked up at the end. Unfortunately, the kicking performance from both teams was abysmal—potentially one of the worst in NFL history. Brandon Aubrey, who many consider to be one of the best kickers in the league, missed a kick and had one blocked. Meanwhile, the Commanders' kicker, Selbert, missed a field goal and failed to convert two extra points, including one that would have tied the game with just 16 seconds left after the Commanders scored a 78-yard touchdown. It almost seemed like the Cowboys were trying to lose the game. Subsequently, the Cowboys returned the ensuing onside kick for a touchdown. In what is likely one of the strangest games of the season, the Cowboys may have just cost themselves a top-five pick in the draft while simultaneously ruining the Commanders' chances at the playoffs.

Chiefs 30, Panthers 27
The Chiefs continue to find themselves in close games and somehow manage to come out on top. They tend to play down to their competition, regardless of where or who they are up against. On another note, Bryce Young has fully returned and has the potential to be a franchise quarterback. Patrick Mahomes may have had his best game of the season against the weakest defense he has faced. It seems that the Chiefs are not quite the best team in the NFL, yet they keep winning.

Titans 32, Texans 27

Will Levis is a franchise quarterback. This week feels significant, as many second-year players are stepping up and demonstrating their readiness. The Tennessee Titans appear to be on the brink of becoming a very good team. In contrast, the Houston Texans do not seem prepared to make the leap into becoming one of the best teams in the league. While C.J. Stroud is clearly one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, it feels like the team as a whole is not clicking. Hopefully, they can resolve these issues before the playoffs.

Patriots 15, Dolphins 34

Tua Tagovailoa is back, and the Dolphins are on a winning streak. They are one of the hottest teams in the league, and in a year where it seemed like it was the Bills versus everyone else, the Dolphins are making me believe they really have a chance to achieve something special this season. Drake Maye remains the most intriguing player in the NFL for me. He has the potential to be a very special player once he gets some protection and the right weapons. However, I wish they would let him sit out the entire year to learn behind Jacoby Brissett.

Buccaneers 30, Giants 7
The Giants are currently the worst team in the NFL. This game illustrated that quite clearly. The Buccaneers, who are a decent but not exceptional team, made the Giants look like they belonged in college football, facing teams like Georgia or Oregon, rather than competing at the NFL level. The Giants are likely to secure a top two pick in the upcoming draft, but they are not just a quarterback away from turning their fortunes around. What they really need is a complete overhaul in the front office, which, based on recent reports, doesn’t seem very likely at this point. While I can’t say with absolute certainty that they shouldn’t draft a quarterback, if I were in their position, I would consider trading that pick to a team that is close to being competitive and is willing to pay for it.

Lions 24, Colts 7

The matchup between the Lions and the Bills feels like a sure thing every week. The Lions may have the best coaching staff in the league and one of the deepest rosters. It really seems unfair, but we'll see if they can maintain this momentum in the playoffs. On the other hand, the Colts are struggling significantly. Anthony Richardson is a talented quarterback with great potential. However, he often lacks the necessary decision-making skills. He may be one of the dumbest QBs in the league, yet he struggles with short throws while being capable of launching the ball 50 yards. The team is just one quarterback away from improvement and should explore all possible options for trading or drafting a new player this offseason.

Vikings 30, Bears 27

Caleb Williams is improving every week, but they need to hire Ben Johnson as soon as possible. Normally, I would advocate for hiring a defensive coach, but it seems like the new generation of offensive minds is the best approach in the NFL right now. This situation could be the perfect opportunity for him to prove that he is as good as everyone thinks he is. On the other hand, the Vikings don’t seem quite ready, and I’m a bit concerned about their aging defense—not only for the playoffs but also for next year. However, they will have the cap space to revamp, and I’m excited to see JJ McCarthy take over, especially since he will have a year to sit and learn.

Cardinals 6, Seahawks 16

These are the two most consistently inconsistent teams in the NFL. Kyler Murray has been quite disappointing. I believe he might be the most talented quarterback in the league, but he just can’t seem to maintain that level of performance. Geno Smith is in a similar situation; while everyone has a clear understanding of who he is and who he isn’t, he also struggles with consistency. I don’t believe either of these teams will achieve much this year, and it feels like if either of them makes the playoffs, they will be eliminated in the first round. Honestly, I didn’t even want to write about this game because it didn’t seem to matter at all, but perhaps I can be proven wrong later in the season.

Raiders 19, Broncos 29

The Broncos are a very good team, while the Raiders are not. It feels like something significant is about to happen in Vegas this offseason. Whether that involves Bill Belichick or Shedeur Sanders, I’m not sure, but it seems like they are gearing up for something big. On the other hand, the Broncos may be having the most unlikely season in the NFL. Sean Payton definitely deserves to be considered for Coach of the Year, given everything he has had to navigate with Russell Wilson and the team's dead cap situation. They are in a great position to make the playoffs and seem to be gaining momentum at the right time. With all that being said, it really feels like a Broncos-Steelers playoff game is shaping up, pitting Russell Wilson against Sean Payton.

49ers 10, Packers 38

If a team turns the ball over five times, they are unlikely to win the game. The 49ers, without Brock Purdy, appeared to be one of the worst teams in the NFL, which should silence any debates about Purdy being overrated. The Packers performed exactly as expected in this game, and it seems that parting ways with Aaron Rodgers might be one of the best decisions for the franchise. They have one of the youngest and most talented teams in the league, which bodes well for their future success for years to come.

Eagles 37, Rams 20

Saquon Barkley is the MVP. This opinion comes from someone who believes that running backs rarely deserve a second contract, let alone a third. However, he has single-handedly changed the Eagles' fortunes this season, making them a legitimate contender again. I thought it was a great signing, especially considering that he had never played behind a strong offensive line, which provided him with a real opportunity to succeed. That said, the Rams are not very good. The entire NFC West seems to be a collection of average teams that are expected to be much better.

What’s Next

Another incredible week of football has passed, but many questions remain unanswered. Can the Chiefs continue to find ways to win? Are the Bills and Lions on a collision course? Why are the Cowboys still trying to contend? Despite these uncertainties, there are plenty of exciting matchups on the schedule for next week. The only Thanksgiving game that seems worth watching is the Dolphins vs. Packers, which could honestly be one of the games of the year. The winner of that matchup will emerge as a real contender, in my opinion. Additionally, the Eagles are set to face the Ravens in what should be another thrilling game. On Sunday night, the Bills will take on the 49ers. Even though the 49ers are facing some challenges, they are still a dangerous team when Brock Purdy is on the field.
